It depends, and here is on what
Nine questions, nine different months
"When is the best time to visit Kenya?" has no single answer. "When is the best time for what I want?" does.
| If you want… | Go in… | Because |
|---|---|---|
| River crossings | Late August – early September | The herds are in the Mara and the odds are at their highest |
| Big cats with few vehicles | February, or late September | Thin cover, concentrated game, and a fraction of the crowd |
| The lowest possible price | April – May | Green-season rates, where camps stay open |
| A family trip in school holidays | Late July, or the first half of December | The best of a constrained set of dates |
| Birding | November – March | Migrants present, resident birds breeding |
| Landscape photography | November, or May | Green country and storm light |
| A honeymoon | January – February, or late September | Warm, quiet, and the good camps are reachable |
| Kilimanjaro from Amboseli | January – February, early morning | The clearest air of the year |
| Bush and beach together | January – February, or September – October | Both halves work at once |
If you want river crossings
Late August into the first week or two of September. Give the Mara three nights minimum, four if you can, and stay within reach of the river. Book six to twelve months ahead, because everyone else has worked this out too.
And accept the odds honestly: you are buying a good chance, not an outcome.
If you want big cats and space
February. Cover is thin, water is scarce, the animals are concentrated and predictable, and the Mara has a small fraction of the vehicles it carries in August. Late September is the other answer if you also want the wildebeest.
If you want the lowest price
April and May, with November close behind and far easier. See the green season page for the full trade — the short version is that November gives you most of the saving with much less of the risk.
If you want the cheapest month that still feels like the classic dry-season safari, it is February.
If you are travelling with children
School holidays choose your dates, so the honest exercise is picking the best of a constrained set. Late July is peak but reliable. The first half of December is quieter and cheaper than Christmas week and the country is green.
Easter falls in the long rains, which is the one school holiday we would think hard about — if it is your only option, weight the itinerary towards Laikipia and the Rift lakes, which cope with wet ground better than the Mara does.
If you watch birds
November to March. Palearctic migrants arrive with the short rains and stay into the early part of the year, resident species come into breeding plumage, and the country is green. November is the sweet spot: migrants in, rates low, light spectacular.
If you photograph
November for storm light and green country; May for the greenest landscapes of the year; February for clean, hard-edged dry-season work and animals you can predict. August gives you the iconic scenes and the vehicles in the frame.
If it is a honeymoon
January and February, or the second half of September. Warm, quiet, and the camps you actually want are still available — which is rarely true in August.
If you want to see Kilimanjaro
January or February, in the first hour after sunrise, from Amboseli. The mountain makes its own cloud and hides for much of most days in any month; clear, dry air and an early start are the only things that improve your chances.
If you are combining safari and beach
January to February, or September to October. Both are windows where the parks and the coast are good at the same time, which is not true all year — the coast’s windy season runs roughly April to October, so an August safari followed by a beach week is a compromise on the beach half.
